Description

Lingustrum nurtures Kidney Yin and removes Kidney Stasis. It helps improve glomeruli filtration function and restore the glomeruli structures by repairing the damage, dissolving scar tissue in the capillary, and reversing the capillary hardening. Glomerucin is also recommended if there is inflammation in the glomeruli.

1. Chronic Glomerulonephritis and Glomerulosclerosis Chronic glomerulonephritis is the long-term inflammation and scarring of the glomeruli. Compared to acute glomerulonephritis which develops suddenly, the chronic form may develop silently without symptoms over several years. Nearly all forms of acute glomerulonephritis tend to progress to chronic glomerulonephritis. Some acute glomerulonephritis can develop into the chronic form directly. However, many patients may have one acute attack of the disease and then develop the chronic form years later.

The chronic inflammation of the glomeruli causes irreversible and progressive glomerular and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Scattered scars and capillary hardened (sclerosis) in the kidneys' tiny blood vessels of the glomeruli. When this occurs, it will cause damage to the capillary walls.

The glomerular capillaries have small pores in their walls, just like a very fine mesh sieve. Looking from the inside out, the capillary walls are made up of three layers:

  • Endothelial layer has relatively large pores (50-100 nm), which allow solutes, plasma proteins, and to fluid pass through, but not blood cells.
  • Glomerular Basement Membrane (GMB) is fused to the endothelial layer. Its job is to prevent negatively charged plasma proteins such as albumin and globulin from being filtered out of the bloodstream.
  • Epithelial layer of the Bowman’s Capsule (podocytes) consists of specialized cells called podocytes which are the visceral layer of the Bowman’s Capsule. These cells are attached to the basement membrane by foot processes (pedicels). They wrap around the capillaries but leave slits between them, known as filtration slits. A thin diaphragm between the slits has very small pores (8 nm) which prevent large molecules, such as proteins, from crossing and acts as a final filtration barrier.

The glomerular capillary allows water, anions such as sodium and potassium, proteins and even large molecules of the blood plasma solutes to pass the filtration and restrict the filtration of negatively charged proteins, such as albumin, and blood cells such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

The capillary hardening and the scarring will cause reduced permeability which decreases the filtration of the liquid, wastes, and minerals into the urine and patients will experience symptoms of water retention, increased levels of creatine and BUN, and mineral imbalance. On the other hand, a damaged capillary will cause leakage to allow protein such as albumin and blood cells such as red blood cells to pass into the urine causing proteinuria and hematuria. This can lead to symptoms of high protein levels as well as blood in the urine. Patients may also experience pain in the kidney due to blood flow blockage resulting from capillary hardening and scarring.

The condition usually progresses slowly (over years) and may not produce symptoms at the onset. When symptoms and signs do appear, they typically include blood in the urine, swelling, high blood pressure, foamy urine (due to protein content), and frequent nighttime urination. Ultimately the condition leads to a reduction in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and retention of uremic toxins, resulting in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Chronic glomerulonephritis is the third leading cause of CKD and accounts for about 10% of all patients on dialysis.

Lingustrum helps reverse the capillary hardening and scarring and repairs the damage of the capillaries to improve the filtration function and reduce the leakage of protein and blood cells into the urine. It is also recommended to take Glomurucin if there is glomeruli inflammation. Patients can experience symptom improvement within 1 week. 3-4 months of the protocol is required for significant improvement.
