What is DHEA?
DHEA is short for dehydroepiandrosterone (D-hi-dro-epp-E-an-dro-ster-own), a
hormone made by the adrenal glands located just above the kidneys. More than
150 hormones are made by the adrenal glands. However, the most abundant
hormone made by the adrenal glands is DHEA. After DHEA is made by these
glands it goes into the bloodstream, and from then on it travels all over the
body and goes into our cells where it is converted into male hormones, known
as androgens, and female hormones, known as estrogens. Small amounts of DHEA
are also made in the brain by neurons.
DHEA
levels in the body begin to decrease after age 30, and are reported to be low
in some people with anorexia, end-stage kidney disease, type 2 diabetes
(non-insulin dependent diabetes), AIDS, adrenal insufficiency, and in the
critically ill. DHEA levels may also be depleted by a number of drugs,
including insulin, corticosteroids, opiates, and danazol. Elderly people
sometimes have virtually no DHEA. Extremely low DHEA levels are
commonly seen in those with chronic disease regardless of age.

Adrenal
insufficiency
Several studies suggest that DHEA may improve well-being, quality of life,
exercise capacity, sex drive, and hormone levels in people with insufficient
adrenal function (Addison's disease).
Depression
The majority of clinical trials investigating the effect of DHEA on
depression support its use for this purpose under the guidance of specialist.
Will taking DHEA supplements suppress my natural DHEA production?
The production of most steroids in the body is controlled by a feedback
loop. When hormone levels get too high, the body makes less of it, and
when hormone levels are too low, the body makes more. However, DHEA is an
exception to this rule. Preliminary studies do not seem to indicate a
feedback loop for DHEA. It is suggested that small supplement DHEA dosage
will not stop our body’s natural DHEA production.
Obesity
The majority of clinical trials investigating the effect of DHEA on weight or
fat loss support its use for this purpose.
